I would also prefer empty handed training to weapons training as well. To say the ata is lacking is an understatement. But most taekwondo doesn't train with weapons at all. Our training with the escrima is pretty good but thats just because we have two instructors also involved in some fma's.We do some good weapons disarms. But as far as chucks being useless. I dont believe they are any more useless then alot of the stuff the ata does. Some of the ata self defenses are just sad. Who is going to grab one hand and one lapel come on. They may be easily beaten but there alot of things that can be implemented as nunchakus. I think weapons build good coordination but there really isn't alot of weapons training needed outside of disarms and some basics. How hard is it to hit some with a stick or cut them with a knife. Sure you need to be taught some proper strikes and grips but thats about it. Unless you are going to be fighting some guy with an extensive background in weapons training you really dont need much more then the basics.
