I did muay thai for 5 years and have done SanShou for 3 years and find the throws to be seriously disabling in a real encounter and also prefer a highly developed side kick rather than the thai round house, why?, direct linear, far more difficult to see coming than the circular roundhouse.
I have no problems with you thinking that Sanshou is tops I think the throws and takedowns ads a very important dimension to fighting. I think it’s a great sport and a solid MA for SD.

There are good things to say about the sidekick and the round house however I seem to score better with the round kick and for power both are good. I find a good round kick to thigh or knee to be very effective in the street because it’s easy to land and most untrained people can’t handle it.

Plus, I reckon the shin conditioning is stupid and unhealthy. Also, on the street who would be dumb enough to clinch someone which would blind you to a handheld knife coming in below.
Shin conditioning if done right is not necessarily unhealthy but far to many take to far. And landing a hard thrown shin unto someone’s knee (as in leg shield), well now that’s unhealthy.

I love SanShou & seriously hope it gets the far better recognition that it deserves. Reading thru so many posts on here about how ""muay thai kicks all ass forever"" suggests to me a very easily led race of peeps, until you learn some of the far cleverer stuff that SS has to offer, don't comment.

Finally, look at how vulnerable a MT fighter is when he is on the ground, you know, when you see the referee stand in to protect etc... baloney Muay Thai.......................Muay thai is for fa8gots.
MT is still a valid and solid MA I think the SS is going in a good direction though. Tom is right though, comparing MAs gets you nowhere because there is no answer to which is best. What’s best for you may not be the best for someone else, and just because he/she practices a different style doesn’t necessarily make ‘em any less effective as individuals.
