The clinch should only be held for a knee or two it needs to be fast and powerful then break away with an elbow or a push into a round kick. Not to many guys will be able to draw a knife and use it while being forcibly kneed in the face or ribs.
A natural reaction to being clinched is to draw your arms in to protect, only a highly skilled and trained knife fighter can overcome this natural response to draw and stab while his head is being pushed down into a knee.
And if you are fighting a highly trained and skilled knife fighter then you are in a big heep of trouble to begin with!
