i imagine what my instructor did to me using his Tai Chi Sword.... he pretends to run away with 3steps but his sword from behind rushes to my face unseen..... too late to counter it.... but he is good in controlling weapon not to hit me or else - injury
you said "Its best to let them come to you" .... well, it is very true, cause one of our objective in sparring is "no stepping backward" or no retreating step backward" only advance step while the opponent withdraw his step....
now, if the opponent advance his step, we should advance also our step, just like a two robot bulldozers banging each other (while smashing of forearm against opponents forearm) until who's who (the one who's forearm is not moving due to pain) then the fighter who's forearm are most conditioned are now free to enter land his fist to opponent's body and head......
