Well, I can't speak for everyone, but many martial artist are just your average Jo who decide they needed to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones. Many of the guys that train in my dojo, are kind, fit, well rounded individuals who are just cool to hang out with. I think we're all normal people who want to get married and have kids and have long happy lives. There's a very evident stigma around martial arts, as if people think that we're all to be spartan warriors who train to become rock-solid killing machines. I mean could you imagine what you would answer someone about "The Life of A High School Basketball Player" They spend alot of time training and go to many competitions, but still basketball is very much not their first perogative. It's the same way with most martial artists.
As far as an occupation goes, you might consider police work,a body guard, even a martial arts instructor. Probably, alot more than this. I think its great that your starting martial arts though. Its a great way to improve yourself in almost every aspect of fitness. I think everyone has a time in their life when they don't know what they're gonna do with it (their life). Thats when you just start improving yourself. Your Charachter, your relationship with God, your body,etc... Be the best person you can possibly be.
I realize this post is long and largely non-sequitor. Hope its of some help and I hope I didn't wildly miss the point of the question.
