There are grappling classes that touch a lot on striking defense. A good instructor will teach defenses against striking, even in a jiu-jitsu schools. Take the time to really see what classes around your area offer self defense in their grappling program. A lot of schools lean toward the sport aspect of the art. I train in both Gjj and combat sambo, and as far as covering striking and counters, I prefer the combat sambo because of its close quarter fighting techniques.
