Default Empty-handed responses

1. Low thrusting side kick.
2. Thai kick to outside thigh or after slipping a punch straight on the thigh or knee.
3. Low push kick.
4. Knee strikes to the thighs.
5. Foot stomp - can be done to set up a punch while closing the distance or as a strike while grappling (stand-up)

Any kick that's going to work has to be a kick that commits your body weight to the target and you have to be prepared with missing i.e. your opponent rides away from a thai kick or absorbs it and a cross is coming your way.

Setting up the kick too.

Hands need to either post on your opponent, be covering or just about to strike.

Grappling moves to the legs:

1. Knee bar - great defensive manuever when someone's got a rear bear hug, kind of works if they have a headlock - need to bump em first.

2. Ankle lock - if you end up in their guard (ground) or seize one of their kicks.

3. Ankle pin (if you have their back)

Takedowns

1. If you do a single leg, with shoulder hiting below the thigh, you could possible break the leg.

All of these techniques are to be practiced with a qualified instructor and are intended for self-defense only.

I'll let someone else touch the weapon work to the legs.
