Ok Tim, I got your solution.

I assumed you use the comment paid or unpaid for each student. If the student hasn't paid, you enter 'unpaid' and the conditional formatting will highlight the cell in red.

Here's a quick tutorial.

1. Go to Format on the menu bar.

2. Drop down to Conditional format.

3. In the box that opens up, select "Cell is not equal to" and in the blank next to it type in the value you want, such as 'unpaid' or you can use a dollar amount.

4. Click on the format button, go to patterns.

5. Click the color you want to pop up if the cell value is not equal to 'paid'
