grappling is awesome for self defense. it teaches you to be calm, and how to escape from all the worst positions, like mentioned above. it also plays in a important role in keeping people on their feet or keeping better positions. if you train in grappling, people arent going to be able to push you around. another benefit is that if you are a grappler and you fight somene who doesnt know any grappling, they will be completely at your mercy in the grappling range as they wont even know what you are doing to them.

and btw, i didnt even mention the attacks. all the attacks in grappling can do permanent damage to people if not kill them. they are all about breaking bones and seperating muscles from eachother, or choking and strangling techniques.
