Remember that the history of the ninja was written by the government of Japan (the government typically holds the ability to write history). The ninja were a sort of counter-culture, one that arose out of a simple need to survive.
Interesting. I've seen a conversation or two on the same point of the Japanese governments writing of certain "histories" involving the Ninja. For westerners, Ninja/Ninjitsu history is a difficult subject but I think westerners do get the overally sense of the subject. For those of us that believe the Ninja did exist, the main point is that the science used is still effective. the survival skills are still effective. The myths are still usefull in the deception aspects of Ninjitsu. The major question I notice is that few students accept anyone's opinion involving the orgin of the Ninja or will actually state a definition of the Ninja. Don't think you'd get much of a discussion on "What is / was a Ninja?"
