Ten years erases a lot of the annoying memories! But now they're coming back.

Crowds - not of tourists - but of hawkers trying to sell all kinds of junk souvenirs. You'd get to a point where they've thinned out, usually just where a steep section begins, then you excert yourself climbing it, and as you're recovering at the top they hit you. "Hello T-shirt! Hello-post card! Hello Great Wall back scratcher!"

Another memory - one of the first meals we had as a group had some unidentifiable dishes. One of our group was a Muslim and was concerned that it might be pork. We asked the guide. He looked at it, sniffed it, tasted it and said. "Okay. That is meat!"
