Well. . . If getting promoted is your #1 priority then you should find out if attending the event will help you or hinder you of getting your promotion. The reason I say that is - if you go in and fail will that take 2 steps away from getting your Nidan? If your Sensei only requires you to compete just to have the experience. Then by all means go because I think that everyone should experience competition.
