It maybe a matter of preference or the "shiv" they have is more conducive to slashing rather than stabbing.
I once asked a low life skin head (an Arian Nation gang member) who had spent many years in prison a very stupid question, I asked him what his techniques was? He looked at me like I was the dumbest Mothafucker on the planet and said “What technique” I just go forward stabbing as hard and as fast as I can.”
But certainly both methods or combination of methods get used.
