You're not really required to swim in the Army - you are required to swim a bit in the Marines (they have their Combat Water Swim Test) and regular Navy (3rd Class Survival Qualification).
You could use swimming on days that you're not running - that would improve your conditioning alot while allowing your legs to rest.
Situps, Pushps alone can get boring and repetitive. However, you need to be able to bang out alot of them to do well on your physical fitness tests (PFTs).
I would recommend looking at Stewart Smith's material for Army Basic Training.
