I think you might be surprised by peoples self preservation instincts, level of pain compliance, and the effects of adrenaline.

I honestly don't remember ever feeling pain after getting hit during a fight. A few hours later is a different story though.

Know you can knock people out with a slap to the head, and you can slow down some people with a shot to the throat, you could even kill them. But it isn't instantaneous, It would take them a few seconds to realize they were having trouble breathing as the lungs would fill with blood, giving them time to continue to finish you off. Even cutting off the blood flow to the brain takes a few seconds to work.
