Commercial martial arts aren't always sought for fighting alone. Alot of folks do it for excercise, discipline, culture or just as a hobby and there's nothing wrong with that - if they learn some useful self-defense, its an added bonus.

Personally, I would like to learn something for combat purposes only and if it has a deep philosophical or beautiful culture behind it, I think that's a good thing.
