My instructor has me practice kicking with my shin, not the instep, I'm not a tkd guy

I was wondering if my instructor's way of kicking was the best thing to do if I were wearing a shoe. But I guess kicking with the shin is still the best response (unless I'm throwing a high kick of course) even with shoes on. Thanks for bringing up the point that in self defense, medium range kicks that are guaranteed to hit and hit hard are probably the best
