Aw, don’t take it personal. I’m a woman myself, and the “sensitive, romantic gentleman being gay” part is an in-joke. You know, the idea that “all the good ones are either married or gay”.
Also, I’m making a bit fun of the idea that women like to hang out with gay men. Obviously the women around him has no idea that he is gay, and a lot of them would probably be repulsed if they found out (it is after all the Victorian era), but they are still drawn to him, and confuse the fascination with love.

That’s the thing about the character. He
does talk about past relationships because he is not interested in starting a new one, and most certainly not with a woman. He is just always vague about the gender, and people automatically assume he’s talking about women.
