Just wanted to post a follow up review to the Sifu Maidment seminar.
Last night Trinity hosted Sifu John Maidment of the Inosanto Academy who gave us a four hour seminar on Maphilindo Silat and Kali. Sifu Maidment is an entertaining and engaging seminar instructor with a great deal of information to share on martial technique and theory.
The seminar started with footwork, a review of the basic triangle patterns of Filipino and Indonesian arts. From there we looked at entry to occupy your opponent's space - ways to displace and unbalance your opponent. This started with simple technique and went on to cover counters, and counter to counters in an unbalancing flow. Sifu Maidment was attentive and perceptive to the various skill levels of participants - modifications and corrections were given as needed, as were more advanced options for those familliar with the material presented.
From Silat we moved to double stick, working a few variations on flow drills - bringing back the burned rattan smell many of us love. We did a few double stick strips and some free form flows with give and take.
The last part of the session moved to knife work and focus was on knife vs knife. We worked some simple disarms, strips, and counters - also working in kicks or other attacks and counters with the blade.
Sifu Maidment has the ability to see where a student is off just slightly in angle of application and make the small correction that takes the technique to a functional level. We look forward to Sifu Maidment's return (perhaps later this year).
