When I lived in Xi'an in the early-mid 90s, I'd go out for beers with the guys I practiced Taijiquan with and sometimes some stupid drunk would wander over and start trouble, same as anywhere. And they would get smacked in the mouth or thrown on their face, same as anywhere. A couple of the guys I practiced with were the type who, though they wouldn't admit it, enjoyed getting into a little scrap once in a while.

One time I was having a snack in the Muslim quarter with one of the trainers at a KF school I trained at a couple of nights a week when some idiot decided he didn't like the looks of us. Mr Wang gave that boy a pretty good beating if memory serves.


There were no crouching tigers or hidden dragons, and zero wirework. Just folks getting popped in the mouth, swept, thrown, or bounced off a wall. Just like anywhere else.
