I used to keep my hands around my knees, my forearms lightly above my kneecap. I don't like to use head tapping or light distractions and tended to wait for openings or to find them through wrapping up. I wanted to appear as complacent and nonchalant in stance as the situation would allow me to without exposing my legs. With my arms down there like I was holding myself up, I had quick underhooks if I needed them. I had to be careful about getting them caught, but I'd have to be slow in the first place to be penetrated from nowhere.
I tended to approach standing like an explosive, picky predator. I used controlled violence to break away from any situation I didn't like. Sometimes I did use my hands to reach toward a leg, sort of like a fast, lazy shoot, hoping I could tease a hasty sprawl from someone.
