There have been numerous studies that seem to indicate this, both with coffee and with tea. There's no decisive explanation yet, it's more along the lines of struggling to see why tea drinking makes a positive impact to health in some countries (like Japan) but drinking tea makes little impact in others (like the UK), and it's the addition of cream and sugar that seems to be the big difference once you hold the other variables (like type of tea) constant.
My sense is that lots of people around the world drink their coffee and tea black (or green, as it were). Just not as common in the US, where otherwise healthy drinks need to be turned into a creamy sugary snack treat. But your point is taken, if I had to drink it w/ cream or sugar, I'd rather drop it completely.
