Re: the vasaline, use a putty knife and pack as much in each nostral as you can.
Seriously, treat the inside of your nose like you would chapped lips. Just put a little vasaline on your pinky and put a thin coating on the inside of your nose. No need to slather it on like mustard on a pastrami sandwich. A little dab will do ya. The idea is that you are moisturizing the membrane, again, just like you would with chapped lips. Karlinhos was right, neosporin or bacitracin or triple antibiotic ointment (over the counter stuff from your pharmacy) all have the same effect of vasaline but they have the added antibiotic or two to help with healing/infection.
As for the burning of the nose. I believe that DR.'s used to use silver nitrate. It's just a blob, kind of like a match head, on the end of q-tip type stick. The blob of silver nitrate is rubbed against the oozing blood vesel and it cauterizes it. It stings like hell and hurts for a day or so but, in my experience, it has had fairly lasting effects.
Before you try that route, do the vasaline thing and put serious thought into how dry your living quarters are. You can find cheap humidifiers and they have cured more than one bloody nose.
Do you have more bloody noses in the winter time (closed up inside, not much air circulation, dry air, etc)?
