I found I don't have to pull my arm back to throw a powerful blow.. if that's what you mean by saying "it's easier to go for a caveman"..

I have to keep my hand just at hip height, and let my hips initiate the movement like a boxer throwing a punch.. when i do this, I end up with a poweful, fast whipping attack.. no matter where my stick tip starts or what angle I want.. it may not be a "limb removing" attack, but it definitely scores hard..

I found training witha two handed stick against a heavy bag really helped me to learn to do this with a single stick..
