I don't think it's a jerk reaction of grapplers to take a fight to the ground. For example, judokas train most of the time to throw someone else to the ground and remain standing. In judo competition, if you throw someone, the match stops and starts back on the feet, and if you throw them squarely, that's the end of it. And in streetfights, the opponents are not usually formally trained, and though they'll throw some wild punches, they will most likely grab you as well. Standing grappling comes into play in almost every street fight.

Also, I think most grapplers train or have trained some striking art. It's not a question of whether or not striking is a good thing to have; most grapplers started in a striking art anyway.
