About learning a few simple moves versus an advanced reportoire: This may not be the best analogy, but Shaq seems to have no more than two moves (baby hook, jam), yet somehow he gets the job done. If you only need a few techniques to play to your strengths, you can be very effective. The same principle applies to training for self defense.
That said, this year I can only hope that TD and Yao will mop the floor with the Lakers.
