i like what brett is preaching here. if it is anything like dimitri's senshido or franco's cfa, then i'm all for it. few have the stomach for reality, and even fewer wish to face it after they have seen it. it may not be likely that you will go up against a 1%er who is totally capable of disasociating your head from your shoulders, but i would prefer to give myself a fighting chance if/when that happens. martial arts are not self defense. when was the last time you saw/heard about a duel taking place between two evenly matched, same sized opponents? if a someone stands up to you, it's because they think they have something that can put you down. people don't look for a fair fight, and if they run into an even match, they cheat, cheat, and cheat some more.
even if i can beat you in a straight out fight, will not engage you in one unless i have no other option. why get a broken nose in return for knocking someone out in a fair fight when i can jack you after setting you up? i have run into a number of people lately who say they want to be the baddest mf'er around and they don't need to fight dirty to do it. just today, i was listening to a wrestler (yes a wrestler) tell me that he would handle three guys or an armed attacker with no problem. a decent grappler because of his size, but this guy is as green as they come. and ripe to be hurt badly. i don't know where he got these ideas. movies probably.
to be honest, builder, it can be life and death. real life violence is not a game nor a movie. it's not pretty, cool, or romantic. it's definitely true that not every scrap you get into will be with a guy trying to carve you like a thanksgiving turkey. however, things can go from "just messing around" to deadly serious. people don't like to lose. when a fight involves alcohol, the respect of friends or women, or some kind of personal honor, things are almost never over after the "fight." every year, there are a few stories in the paper about the guy who got into a bar fight or arguement, won, and stayed around instead of leaving. well, the "loser" went home, got a 12 gauge, came back, and blew the "winner" off his bar stool. didn't seem like life and death at the time, did it?
how about the times that a bouncer throws a couple of trouble makers out of his club? they wait around for him to get off and shank him as he's walking out the door. the same thing could happen to you as a patron of said bar/club. piss the wrong person off, and you've got a real problem on your hands. while this kind of thing doesn't happen everywhere, depending upon where you live, things are life and death. please weigh this. everyone has different needs, and they should be respected. i just emphasize again (for everyone), don't mistake the goal of your training. if it is for sport, or recreation, or enjoyment, then is is probably not adequate for reality. those seeking esoteric or aesthetically pleasing systems should steer clear of reality schools. i don't think brett is trolling or trying to round out his portfolio with our cash. many others do just that, and it annoys the hell out of me. i won't name names, but it is a pain. though i've not been a member here for long, until brett starts mentioning that he is selling books/videos in every post that he has, i will continue to enjoy his presence here.
sorry about the long post everyone
