i'm definitely no expert on women's self defense, but i thing karate would be the wrong way to go with her. muggers/rapists dont' kickbox their victims, and even if they did, i doubt that most women could ko them anyway. she would be better served knowing how to cause serious trauma from close quarters. take a look at richard dimitri--www.senshido.com--he's got an excellent women's self defense course going (or so i've heard). helen stratzl works with him, and i wouldn't want to mess with her. maybe you'll find something you like.
