The more obvious difference is that Muay Thai has a relatively limited amount of techniques compared to Yaw Yan, which is derived from the term Sayaw ng Kamatayan, literally translated as the "Dance of Death". There are a great variety of kicks in the Yaw Yan arsenal, however similar the arts may appear, the similarities are merely superficial. I am no expert on Yaw-Yan so I can only relate what little I have heard from one of my teachers from the Philippines. Yaw-Yan was created in the Philippines, and a few champions from Thailand came to openly challenge FMA practitioners, and they were soundly defeated by Yaw-Yan practitioners.
