Tight abs work as a shield between something that hits you and your internal organs. There aren't any bones protecting your tummy!
Traditionally, whenever you attack, you tighten your abs with a hard exhale, just in case the opponent evades your attack and counters - you have your "shields up".
Also, when you see you're gonna get hit in the abs and can't do anything about it, exhale sharply and tighten your abs at the same time - "shields up".
