Guardmaster, I've seen a bunch of your posts and you seem bent on becoming a good grappler solely through being good at the guard. I don't think that works, you need to be more well rounded than that.
Even someone with a killer guard like Barret Yoshida has learned and mastered all the other positions. And he could easily tap 99.9% of the population by pulling guard and getting them.
But anyway, to answer your question, there are certain people who are thinking ahead and when you try to pull guard on them or when they take you down they are already taking steps to avoid the closed guard. But you can still get an open guard or half guard against them if you are moving your hips well and not lying flat. You are so limited if your goal is to begin every match with your opponent in your closed guard.
It's very rare that someone has taken me down into side mount, and if that happens it means I made a huge mistake while they were taking me down.
