Ratobranco is a smart man, he brought up a great point about multiple assailants. I once got into a fight with two guys, and down to the ground it went. I didn't try to take it there, but even trying to zone, use footwork, etc still is difficult. It only takes one second for your focus to shift to one guy, and another soon has a hold of you. It was only my grappling base that saved me here, as I ended up on top of the guy. The other was hitting, and trying to get my hands behind me from a standing position. And I was able to get back to my feet only because I was on top, and had a little luck on my side.
The other self-defense situation was a fight in a work-place that he forum knows about. It was rather recent, but not that big of a deal. All I used here was a takedown, a wrestling breakdown, pin, mount and threatened pummeling.
But again, Rato is right. It depends on the fight. Personally if I have to fight 3-6 guys I bet I will lose if I don't get the hell out of there

And it doesn't matter if you are a stand up fighter. You can't fight that many people no matter who you are. Just reality.
Take care,
Ryu
