There was supposed to be a hint of that in my post, but I guess it wasn't as apparent as I though it was. You're right though. Statistics are almost always driven by someone's own agenda, whether it be the researchers doing the study, or the folks footing the bill for the study. So, how many sociology courses have you taken?
