For me, it has been standing grappling (from wrestling, bjj, and judo) that was best for me in self-defense. I've never been in a full-out street fight, but I've been in a couple situations where I think my grappling ability on my feet discouraged some aggressive individuals from taking things farther when they tried to shove me or rough me around on the feet. In other words, grappling allowed me to stand up well when others tried to size up my stength/ability, and then they changed their minds about the confrontations. Standing grappling has also been a good skill for me in a couple of bar brawls and panic scenes that I was on the periphery of, which allowed me to stay on my feet and avoid the action, when I might have otherwise been pushed to the ground and probably stomped.
Remeber that grappling is not all about chokes and arm bars.
