In some studios, everyone has them. It is a badge of honor almost in a cult sort of way. I am usually one of two or three people who wear ear protection at our place.
My opinion is that it is a sign of immaturity and wanting to fit in. Most of these guys will regret it when they have to grow up and get jobs and responsibilities.
A prospective employer will just be staring at their ears during the job interview, a perspective customer will do the same. The best term for them I have heard is "chick repellent".
Lastly, why telegraph to a possible opponent on the street that you are a grappler.
DUMB. REAL DUMB.
