April is an interesting time to go. How long are you staying for? I think you might find it quite warm. May is the absolute hottest in Chiang Mai. The cold season is well done, and there is no hope for the rain yet. April also has Songkran, which is quite interesting as well. Some people love it, some people hate it.
I think a balance between the two is a great idea. You'll certainly get more personal attention with Pedro, he limits his class sizes. Lanna has more of a free for all system, but if you have the drive, they'll put you to work.
