Wow...were there any replies from people who actually train seriously in Krav Maga?

Now there is!!

I have trained in Tae Kwon Do (not sport) and Hapkido. They were both great. I wouldn't trade what I gained from them for anything. I wanted to train in something else..something less formal. Something effective and something that would make me work very hard. My first thought was JKD. But then I heard about Krav Maga and decided to check it out...

The killer instinct thing...or the natural instincts...The philosophy is that if you get attacked or find yourself in a situation where confrontation is inevitable, unleash everything you have and don't stop until it's over. The 'natural' really applies to how the punches, kicks and strikes are delivered. If you are at distance from your opponent, kick. The kicks are delivered very quicly and with a lot of power. They resemble Muay Thai kicks to a degree. Targets are groin, knees, thighs, ribs, stomach. Nothing too high. If you are a little closer, punch. Punches are fast and very powerful. At this range the knees come into play. They are brutal. A little closer and the elbows start flying. I would say the natural just means 'what makes sense at the time'

The killer instinct...I don't have a killer instinct but what I do have from the training is the attitude that I do not want confrontation. Ever. But if its 'go' time I amd going to go hard and fast to end it still standing. The defensive side is pretty good. I think Hapkido was better. But KM does a good job of incorporating the defense/redirection with a simultaneous attack. They do ground work that is pretty effective. Weapon defense is good. The mental training is what sets it apart though. That and the ferocity behind it is something to be reckoned with!!

I read something about it being a trend. Krav Maga has been around for quite a while. It got its beginnings in the 1940s and has been used around the world. I don't know much about any of the other arts other than those I listed but here's what I have so far...If I were to put me with the TKD and Hapkido up against me with Krav Maga...I think no one would walk away. It isn't something to be dismissed. Besides it is a lot of fun to practice. Try it! You will like it.
