They just teach you a series of movements. Is your opponent going to do what you expect them to do in your next trained movement? Probably not.

Why learn a kata that teaches kick block punch if the guy is going in to take out your legs? It just doesnt make sense.

They may instill the basic movements and teach you how to execute them better, but if I say take kickboxing for 4 months and my buddy takes karate for 4 months. He learns kata after kata and the basic blocks, punches and kicks and I learn all the basic punches and kicks and then actually use them against someone. Saying that we are the same build and strength, I am betting that I will kick his ass over and over.

Its just common sense.
