I totally agree with Tom on this. I think TKD is a great sport. TKD guys have good strategies and are good competitors. When you see these guys that are Olympic class competitors these guys would beat the hell out of most of us.

The problem is there are far to many Mcdojangs out there with 10 year old black belts and others who get there black belts in a couple of years. Most of these people fight more like a mid level color belt. People from other styles become a bit skeptical about TKD. This is also a reason Karate gets a bad name as well. Believe me TKD isn’t the only style/art that gets flamed on this forum. Pretty much all the traditional systems take some flak in one way or another. Most deserve it.

In reference to self-defense most people don’t think that TKD is very practical because TKD is geared towards sport but those same people say the same thing about Karate and other MAs. A style that relies on so many kicks especially high kicks is a bit unpractical for SD. That doesn’t mean that some TKD practitioners can’t defend themselves very well. Boxing, low kicks to the legs, elbows, clinches and knees are much more suited for SD.

People who practice strictly TKD have trouble fighting Thai fighters and kick boxers for the reasons that tom has already stated. Too many less experienced and less skilled fighters try to many fancy kicks, or kicks to the head level that get them in trouble when they are fighting someone who likes to kick to the legs, these fighters end up on the ground a lot. TKD doesn’t stack up well against other sport MA like MT very well but TKD is excellent to cross train in and it can compliment other sport MA like KB, and MT very well.

Look at the thread in the MT section tkd vs muah tai
