Actually Thai Bri patterns can help you fight better! If done full power they can help get you into shape and tone muscle, that at the least can aid in a fight situation. Better to be in shape than out of breath and too weak to fight or flee!

I joke but they really can be a good workout, I weight train and try to stay in shape but the occasional time I go to a patterns seminar (which for me is like going to the dentist for a root canal) I am so sore the next day I can barely move, good toning workout.

As for patterns competition, it's just a competitve format to see who looks good doing it, not how good they are at combat or martial arts in general... probably why I always sparred at tournaments and never did patterns....but if you watch the world champion pattern winners they look really good, they get my respect for being so good at something that I am not and for all the practice and training they did to become world champion at something. Too bad TKD doesn't pay the winners like Karate does!
