I am what I consider a counter-fighter. I try hard to capitalize on opponent's footwork and attacks, hitting when they miss or step the wrong way. Sometimes it's long range, sometimes it's in close, so by the definitions here, I guess I don't fit any. Of the pro's out there right now, I try to model Trinidad pretty closely. As for historical boxers, I try to pattern some of my movement and counterpunching after Ray Robinson, although I am a heavyweight. I also work hard on being agile, so my footwork is atypical for a HW.

Do you allow your students to wear motorcycle helmets when you go all out?

Before I get to your question, I have to say, Tom, you have the best "Location" listed under your name of anyone on this forum! I still laugh out loud when I see re-runs of Farley doing that bit!

As for helmets, no, we tend to not need them too much. None of the guys I train with are real egotistical or bullyish, and we'll cater to each other on intensity. The people I get in and really bang with are usually as good or better than me and the rest are in competition, so I don't care if I hit too hard

Besides, anymore, I can generally tell how effective I'm performing without having to go full-tilt-boogie all the time. For example, I had three different workouts today with different boxers varying from my smallest guy (a welterweight) to my biggest (a 280 pound All Army heavyweight champ). Each was obviously a little different. I'm not going to go in against the welterweight and bang him up. He'd never be able to compete, and I outweigh him by close to a hundred pounds. SO I let him work on his own power, and only hit back hard enough to keep him honest. Against the heavyweight, I'm fighting for my own safety! He outweighs me by 35-40 pounds on a good day, and he's got more experience than me, so I have to hit sharper and capitalize more. Leading him just doesn't work as well. Even so, we only spar at 70% or so, and if one of us gets his bell rung, the other guy will back off. We both have to be ring ready, and if the training causes more damage than the fight, well, you're never ring ready because you'r too busy recovering to train.

Tom Yum you can only military press 155 at 160 pounds? no offense but thats pretty weak... i could do 200 when i was 15 at about 150... and can do like 10 of 200 at 17 and i dont even work on my shoulders... i do however lift alot of weights so my shoulders prolly do get a pretty big workout anyway... oh yeah im only 160 right now anyway... soo its not like im 300 pounds or something... your bench however is pretty good though... im curious to know if ur talking freeweights or machines (or smith for bench)... and your squat beats mine.. i can only do like 330 once. anyway lemme know if its freeweight or what...

I use an upright bench with a support rack for the bar and a spotter on the military press. All other excercises are free weight.

My lifts:

Military press 155, 8 reps
Bench Press 225, 8 reps
Squat 385, 6 reps

Dang, military press 200 at 10 reps! You've got me motivated!!

Default my boxing /kickboxing style

when i train in kick boxing I just boxed like 95% of the time because of my vast kicking back ground, so I needed to learn how to punch from the ground up, basically I like to stay in the center of the ring cause I hate fighting in corners/infighting/ being on the ropes,I always keep my jab popping in my opponents face to keep him from countering/as a destraction and I'm always moving off line so his punch misses and he has to play catch up with me, which gives me enough time to keep him at bey with my jab, I look for openings to throw a cross or a weird front hook that people call my hooking jab. since I'm a southpaw and most of my sparring partners aren't we play footsie, with them trying ot get their lead foot on the outside of mine and counter and me not allowing that to happen.my overall goal is to use defense/foot work/covering up to not get hit and to hit them as much as possible, you never know when that ko punch is goin to get you so just because I'm a heavy weight, I cut at like 220 or 210 and I'm either 6'1" or 6'2"
doesn't mean I have to be a brawler and walk into punches, my first way of fighting was to brawl and if my ring plan goes wrong I'll revert back to ring bully mode but a fmr teacher told me that's like putting all your eggs in one basket. So me thinks it's best to have more than one plan, cause things have a way of going to hell in a hand basket once the bell rings and the gloves start hitting you in the head.

im 5'9 and 160 pounds but am also 15 and quite sturdy built for my age, coach always saying my legs are like tree trunks . I more of a slugger, i get annoyed with people who duck in throw a combo and jump back out cause i cant hit them when they do that . I like to get somone up close or in the corner and throw powerful combos. My biggest goal is to make my jab fast and sure and to work on bobing and weaving. and to be light on my feet i got big feet and big legs so i end up rooting myself down and throwing instead of staying on my toes and moving fast.

I guess I'd say I'm more of a long range keeping distance type of boxer because I have really long arms proportionate to my body. My fingertips are almost at the side of my knees when I'm standing up. Plus my in-fighting leaves a lot to be desired at the mo..

So what you're saying is when you're in the middle of the boxing ring, sparring or fighting, you grab a chair and start swinging it at your opponent, then kick him in the jimmy?

Damn, that's dirty boxin'...

no, not when im in the ring:P when im on the streets, if i KNOW im well overpowered, i will grab whatever i can to keep the opponent from giving me that hit that will knock me out, and start hitting him with it, but that is only when im for sure, i will be brutally beat by someone..for instance, if you saw that wrestler, Big Show, coming at someone like Bruce Lee or Tony Jaa or some small guy, do u think the small guy is going to even think about fighting fair? perhaps bruce lee would, i know tony jaa wouldnt, and im sure as hell not going to stick around to see him beat the shit out of me and me not being able to help it, so yeah im a dirty fighter, i will do anything i can to stay concious, or better yet alive its a dog eat dog world out there..either you kill or be killed

Good points.

Bruce Lee was a small guy, 5'6" and 140 or so. He was one helluva scrapper for his size, but there comes a size/strength limitation to skill and as you've pointed out, you've got to be a smart fighter.

In response to the original thread topic, what kind of boxer are you? Do you box?
