what is a good amount of training to be doing as a beginner, i go to college during the day but there is a gym there so on mondays i have been doing an hour and a half including 3 miles on the rowing machine, pushups, situps, inclined situyps, and weights then on tuesdays after college i go to my boxing gym for an hour and a half training session on wednesdays i do the same as mondays and then on thursdays i go to the boxing gym again.. basically i want to know if it is ok to be training everyday like this. also i would like to know how much running i should be doing im about 144 lbs and about 5,9" tall can anybody please help me out

cool thanks for that, so should i be training everyday? or every other? i seem to have a problem with my left shoulder, when i throw a left hook it clicks at around the point where my collar bone meets my chest and where it meets my shoulder, it doesnt hurt but im worried it might mean that something is rubbing that shouldnt also ive noticed that if i push down on my collar bone then it doesnt click when i throw the shot any ideas what that could be?

Yeha ... 60 -65% ... too bad you wont get any results then... as you have to be working above 70% of your max heart rate for 20 mins to get any real results on cardovascular strength... ask any kinesiologist/sports trainer/sports medecine type person...

Training every day is ok if:
1) Your trainings are different every day (one day more for legs, the other more for arms...) 2) You feal good after the trainings (beeing tired is ok) 3) You sleep well (very important) You can run run as much as you want if you run right. "How to run right?" you ask me.. I anwser : Breathe only with your nose (even if brocken) with the same tempo. And run with the same tempo as you breathe! If you'll do what I just said - you'll be just fine. If not, then better consultite your doctor. Glad that I could help, Zhet |

You can run run as much as you want if you run right. "How to run right?" you ask me.. I anwser : Breathe only with your nose (even if brocken) with the same tempo. And run with the same tempo as you breathe!
Do you mean i should only breathe through my nose when i run. Can you really go fast and only breathe through your nose? |

1) Keeps you from getting ill!
2) You can't controle your breath as well when breathing trought mouth (try to make a sharp move using your breath the results are remarkable) And other reasons I can't count... |

I've been told to breath throught the nose as well for different reasons - I'm sure that I could not run my sprints that way though.
Mr Brewer, any thoughts on this?

Breathing through your nose allows your body to absorb more of the oxygen as it passes the mucous membranes. The mucuous membranes also act as a filter...filtering out dusk, bacteria, etc.
Also in cold weather, breathing through your nose warms the air before it hits the lungs. Hence why animals in cold regions have large nostrils. Cold air hitting the lungs can lead to upper respitory infections and pneumonia When relaxed, most people breath through thier nose. Breathing trhough your mouth is kind of like a dog panting. It's not very efficient.

The main reason I have heard for nose breathing was from a ring perspective; Breathing through your mouth may give your opponent the impression that you are fatigued - and if you are, you sure don't want him to know it.

thanks people thats all
real helpfull though it doesnt look like il be doing much runnning at the moment anyway now i have a shin splint in my left leg i was told that you get them from runiing o9n hard ground or skipping and anything that involves bouncing on your toes, if anybody has any ideas on how to get rid of a shin splint i would love to know its agony. |

Rest is the only real solution to shin splints, although I've heard that nutrition can affect your suceptibility and healing time.
Yeah, they suck eggs.

Hey Danrogers29...what's up man? Some of the advice given here is good, and some is way off. Listen bro, boxing is a SKILL sport. You can get all the 'cardio" that you need by doing specific skills drill with intensity, such as Olympic drills, etc. It has been said that boxing is 70-80% anaerobic...that means long, slow distance runs are not very applicable...if you want to get fighting fit you must crank up the intensity in your workouts. Also, if you think you need supplemental training, focus more on speed-strength (explosive lifting,ploymetrics, complex training) this will give you much more functional development as a fighter. The bottom line is though, you have to box...that means sparring regularly and entering as many tournaments as you can...
