I got shin splints in football.... I just toughed it out and they went away after a while. Hurt like a bitch anytime someone touched my shin though, I would fall over like I was dying.

Ice them whenever you can, 15 minutes on, 45 minutes off.... try to stretch good too, especially your lower leg.... plantar flexions and dorsiflexions.

Lots of Ice.

A good stretch is to find a curb or some other kind of thing that's a few inches off the ground. Put your toes on top of it with your heel close to the bottom of it, reach down, and stretch. You should feel a pull all around your lower leg area. It's a good stretch I learned in Okinawa as we used to run 10 miles every Monday on hard pavement, which is one of many things that causes shin splints. Do the above as well, and you'll get better soon but if it keeps getting bad, you're going to have to take some time off. Better to compete later than tough it out now and when you're on your way to the top it gets severe and you end up never being able to compete again.
