Here are some stereotypes I have heard about boxers both amateur and professional. Can you tell me if they are true or not?
1. Professional boxers are just mean, nasty, unsympathetic people who mouth off a lot. Is this true? Or are there are lot of decent guys too? 2. Boxers get stupid because they get hit in the head too often. True? 3. Boxers (like Ali) get problems and diseases later in life b/c of constant headshots. True? After all, Ali has Parkinson's along with many other health problems. |

2. I heard that rumor too. I think its true but I'm no doctor. 3. Same as number two. But I think I'd rather be great like him at one point, hell were all gonna die someday and I think being remembered as a great fighter and a legend is a good thing.

1) I know a few pros who are nice guys.
2) I think it is true for pros, but amateurs should be fine because you arent going for the knock out and you have headgear. 3) Not sure. |

I'm no boxer but these are quite general questions so i hope this helps...
1.I believe Its not so much the sport/art as the person doing the sport/art. I know more than a few TMArtists who speak with their asses rather than their minds or hearts. I've also met Boxers who are great people, Humble outside the ring but kings inside. I think its a stereotype and partly how the media works that we end up with the stereotpye that boxers aren't nice people. No successful newspaper will go around reporting X-boxer is such a nice guy. People want Tyson fights, bites and rapes. 2. Getting hit in the head kills your brain cells. Not just the boxers. But don't let that stop you from sports. Chances are, you'll have plenty of brain cells to last you into your late 70's. Soccer players a few generations ago also suffer head injuries from heading a solid Leather ball. I bet even soccer players nowadays suffer from slight damage to the head, but i don't think its substantial damage, to the point that one becomes really stupid. I think the Stupid comes in when you stop thinking with your head and start thinking with your fists. 3. Although there is no solid proof that Clay's parkisons is due to his boxing career, chances are its a part of the problem. Like i noted previously, getting any hit in the head kills your brain cells, kill enough, problems start to occur. Ali might have had a predisposition to get hit by parkisions and boxing may have accelerated that. But like the guy before me said, It feels better when you go down in a blaze of glory than just going down. |
