Default Thinking about joining boxing club

My friend just got back into boxing and is encouraging me to join too. I am fairly althetic but out of shape since basketball season ended. I am 16 and 190lbs and 6'4''. I really am not that fast but I have strength. Do you think I would fair well enough to give competitive boxing a try? What weight class would they put me in?

Depends on what you want to fight at. I never fight at my "walk around" weight. I dont know how youd do? Go train and see if youre good. If youre not good, train till youre good. If youre good train and get better. Some people have natural talent, but it doesent take you far.

Eh height can be good and bad. Height usually gives you more reach. However, youll be more lanky. Someone 190 5"8 in good shape would be very strong. Skill over conditioning and strength though. I wouldnt worry too much about height and weight yet...if youre just starting you wont be thrown into the ring for awhile. Concentrate on training. Workout, weightlift, road work, the whole thing.

MTG is exactly right - If you want to box, go box - you aren't going to get any of your answers until you've been training a while, gotten into shape and have some basic skills.
