    Jab as a powerpunch.

My new trainer has been teaching me to use my jab as a powerpunch. I was always taught and told it should be a quick punch for judging distance and setting people up. How do you guys feel about this? He says it's the old school way.

I like the power jab too.

You dont always have to jab the same way. In some instances, where your hands and the rest of your body are located, could prevent some types of jabs and dictate others.

Many trainers will tell you of 7, 11, or more types of jabs.

    strike!

Damn, that's alot. Thanks. He says light ones are ok, but don't use them as much. He says trainers today are wimps and people should train to be able to fight 15 rounds or more. He doesn't like the fight that people get tired, including pros, by 6,10, or 12 rounds.

Is your trainer Mickey's son....dose he also tell you to run around an catch chickens? i think that you should use whatever is there....use a few fast jabs to see how the guy reacts to it and if you can tag him with it....throw a few hard ones to see how he reacts. You dont want to overcommit and throw a hard strike right away...the guy might telegraph the punch and counter it.

seems like you got yourself a hardcore trainer..but i think the power jab is the right thing to use..jack dempsey thought so in punchers are made not born...and so did bruce when he said you should punch like you mean buisness! All of the time

Thanks guys... I'm starting to like the light jabs less and hard jabs more. Not saying I don't like light jabs, just seeing the other side as being a more effective thing. He also favors solid technique/power over anything else in a punch. He doesn't like Peter Mandredo's gym and all the other popular gyms in the area. He won't let me even spar untill at least a month. He won't let me throw any hooks or uppercuts yet either. He's having me go slow and steady, improving technique of straight shots. I didn't like it at first, but now that my technique has increased by alot I'm loving it. I hated training slow and methodic but it's cool. I think ill be tearin up people when I get into competitions.

Btw... for whoever said is he Mickey... not as old, but definitly one of the more Italian guys I've ever met. And I live near Fed Hill, which is the most Italian area in New England. He's got a pro kickboxer training people 4 times a week, and an ex pro boxer that helps out round the gym. It's a good place, small and everything. He's also come up with a cool idea... swipe cards like at hotels. He's getting em put in soon so when hes not there we can train. Hours will be like 7am-9pm.

    you gonna fight?

so are you gonna try the Glovesa this spring? If you learn a stiff Jab, get your weight and cardio under control you should be able to walk through the sub-novice division!

A Jab is the most important punch in boxing, and a stiff Jab is even better, just make sure you don't smother yourself,

J-Luck I told you I am a silver level usa boxing coach and an open fighter didn't I
if you need any stuff let me know I have many sources, I didn't know you were boxing!! that is so awsome!

Just because he is teaching you this doesn't mean to forget every other thing about a Jab and do only his method.

building mass but not loosing speed

Hi, am sure if a variation of this subject has been discussed already. I'm 6' 3" and weigh about 185lbs. Am looking to build muscle and get up to around 205-210 area (also reduce my body fat which is hovering at around 15-17%). How does one build mass without loosing speed. plus i'm not a fan of supplements so would like to do it with all natural food if possible.

Polymetrics....they increase your explosiveness while at the same time giving you a great cardio work out with added strength and speed. If you check out what Bernard Hopkins was doing for the tarver fight that is exactly what you need to do.
