Default maize bag

anyone know where i can get a maize bag in the states...

eg http://www.sugarrays.co.uk/shop/home.php?cat=127

theyre easy to get in the uk, but the maize bags i find online in the states seem to be handbags rather than something you find in a gym..

If you're looking for a higher-quality rig, check out Title boxing:

http://store.titleboxing.com/everlast-slip-ball.html

They have two models, but I like the Everlast one a little better. No solid reasoning behind that, because I also use a sock full of playground sand at home. They have a cheaper one for around $20, and then the $24 Everlast.

HOLY SHIT! I just looked at the prices on the link you posted. Someone in England is out of his head! It's a freaking bag full of sand or corn!

hahaha... thanks mate

those ones you saw on the site weigh about 66 lbs... the maize absorbs your blows and they dont swing... they are tear drop shaped

i actually saw a nice alternative on that site, a tear drop bag by twins

So you're not looking for a bag that swings back and forth quickly in order to help you train slips and evasions, you're looking for a heavy-bag type of arrangement?

In that case, Ringside's Bodysnatcher bag is awesome. It weighs about 65-70 pounds, and is shaped exactly like what you pointed out. It allows you to work the body, uppercuts, as well as straight punches. It also swings a little more than a really heavy bag, so it makes you get up out of the cement and work your footwork, which I like. We have one at our gym, and it's one of my favorite bags due to the diversity of skills you can train on it.

And it's still quite a bit less expensive than the bags on your link.

I was confused because a maize bag here in the States is a very small (smaller than an average speed bag) bag hung from a short chain so that it swings quickly at head level. It's used for practicing slipping, bobbing, ducking, and weaving, usually while shadowboxing right beneath the bag. Tyson used them religiously early in his career, and that's kind of what brought them into the public consciousness.

Here's a short tribute video of Tyson in training. You'll see the maize ball we all thought you were talking about at around 1:15 or so.

This video has a pretty high cheesey-factor, but it looks like it was put together by a Frenchman, so it figures.

No worries, and you're more than welcome. I love the little maize bag for training your evasiveness. It also adds a little fun to shadowboxing, and it keeps you moving, which can be tough after several rounds. Learnign to throw punches while evading, and even how to use the evasions themselves to mask punching set-ups are just a few benefits of the maize bag. All of my boxers use it each and every session, and it definitely makes them tougher to hit.

That young version of Mike Tyson really was something, wasn't he...
