Hi,
I want to start boxing, and have a few questions. Would it help me to defend myself? Would it be worth training in boxing and takewondo at the same time? There is also one problem, my parents! I am 17 years old and they don't like the idea of me doing boxing, they say they don't like it because it's too dangerous, what could I say to convince them that I will be allright? -Ben |

Boxing is not a martial art...it is a sport & one of the best in terms of pure athleticism. It is not meant to be used on the street, but improvised like the Filipinos did before boxing (FMA called Panatukan) came to the Islands; it can be devestating. Boxing is a way to gets some "Aliveness" (see Thorton at straightblastgym.com) Boxing & its training while training in something like BJJ or CSW would be very tough.

Snap
My parents are the biggest opponent to me entering the ring, so i also stopped boxing for a while. But it was the feeling of; when Im older and watching a great boxer fighting on T.V wondering wether or not I was good to be in his shoes or should I say gloves. This isnt really a excuse to tell parents parents or gardians but just to let you know u r not alone. Also if you are thinking of taking boxing up as a career and you are crap at least you will find out quicker and hear the inevitable "I told you so" from who ever told you not to do it.

There was a study done about 10 years ago on sports and injuries. It was found that boxing was the safest sport out of Football, Basketball, and Baseball.
Boxers recieved less injuries, and when they were injured, the worst boxing injury was found to be nowhere near as bad as the lightest Football injury. For instance, in boxing you will either get a concusion, a broken nose, or a broken metacarpal (knuckle). Football injuries range from death, torn ACL's, multiple fractures of all bones, and coma's. If your parents will let you play football, but not box...enlighten them as to the ridiculousness of their thought processes.
