Post Tip of the Week

One of the most basic things in boxing is also one of the most neglected.
A proper stance.
From a proper stance a boxer has the advantage of being in the best position offensively and defensively. Although it is true that you should use what is most natural and comfortable, you should do this while maintaining a stance as close to the basic boxing stance as possible.
With a distance to front to back of about shoulder width, turn your feet slightly. The front of your lead foot should be in line with the heel of your back foot. Your rear heel should be slightly raised. Bend your knees slightly.
Now this is where alot of guys run into trouble. Lower your chin to tuck yourself in BUT DO NOT LEAN FORWARD. This is an often made mistake which leads to a disaster in the ring and on the street. This exposes the head as a good target, and takes away from the effectiveness of the stance. If you want to go lower, then use the knees.
Tuck your elbows in to your sides, with your hands up at about cheek to chin level, whereever it is comfortable. Keep this stance as loose as possible.
Here are some ways to work on stance.

Spend 1 round just standing in front of a mirror in proper stance. Note how it feels, make any corrections.
Spend rounds moving forward, back, sideways in your stance maintaining it.

Thats it for now. Feel free to add any questions I haven't addressed here.

Keep Training!

Default Good Advice

Thats some very important advice. I know some boxers try to violate the basics-- but it just won't work in the long run unless you're that good.
