Question Ab conditioning

Anyone have any training methods for learning to take punishment to the body (i.e abs, sides) ?

I remember when I did kung fu, we used to get our partner to drop a medicine ball on you when you were lying on your back. It never seemed to do much for me though.

My ab workout consists of just crunches and sit ups. I've also started doing sit ups on an incline bench. I'm nowhere near getting a 6-pack though, but I think this is more to do with my diet.

There is tons of stuff that you could do. Medicine Ball drills are one of the best ways to train your stomach for absorbing hits. Have a partner throw it at your midsection as hard as you can take it, receive the blow with your midsection, then catch it, throw it back to your partner and repeat it. The drill described by swan is also really good. You can also make the heavy bag hit your stomach by pushing it and absorbing the impact. Have a partner hit your stomach with focus gloves while you do sit ups, etc. I have a drill I could give you but I gotta leave right now so if you are interested PM me. Good luck man, hope this helps.

Thanks. When you let the medicine ball hit you should you tense up a little or let it knock the wind out of you?

Check the latest copy of Muscle & Fitness. They have a very good three month routine.

You should definitely tense up your stomach in preparation for the hit. If you were in a sparring match or fight and you see a blow coming, you should tense up your gut, that way the punch or kick doesn't knock the wind out of you. The medicine ball drills reinforce that concept, you wanna tense your stomach up momentarily, receive the blow and keep going. By the way, a really good variation of that drill is to do the "passing drill" that I mentioned above but after your partner catches the medicine ball, you blast it with punches or kicks, it develops your ability to counter-attack after being hit. Good luck. By the way, you are welcome man, anytime.
